Motor Trade Approaches to Water Conservation

In recent years the importance placed on the environment has increased and issues such as climate change and depleting resources have become apparent. With the drought putting increasing pressure on our water supply and water restrictions in place there are many examples within the motor trade of businesses doing better than compliance, taking matters into their own hands with good ideas and initiatives to reduce water consumption.

Water is used within the industry for washing cars and parts along with every day uses in kitchens and bathrooms etc. The high amount of water used is in many cases is being wasted. There are many methods which have been developed to reduce, reuse and recycle water within the motor trade. Car washing is one practice which consumes large amounts of water. Water restrictions have caused many within the industry to stop washing cars altogether however in some cases businesses have gone beyond compliance to produce outstanding results. The following are a couple of examples from MTA-SA members.

Solitaire Automotive Mile End is doing their part to reduce the consumption of water in their new premises. The installation of two underground tanks with a joint capacity of 40,000L has allowed them to collect the rainwater from the workshop roof. The water is filtered and then used in a number of areas of the business, including motor vehicle radiators, batteries and windscreen washer systems. Rainwater is also supplied to all wash bays within the workshop and also supplies the car wash system where they have minimised the water used in the washing process. The car wash waste water is then filtered and reused which is what SA water are encouraging. By using rainwater and recycling waste water, Solitaire Automotive has not only reduced their use of mains water but also no longer need to purchase distilled water.

CMI Toyota is another example of a business that is striving to use environmentally friendly practices. Like Solitaire Automotive, CMI Toyota has installed large tanks beneath their car washing facilities which they use to collect the car wash water. 85% of the water is then reused through the car wash. With this set up CMI Toyota has managed to wash between 30-40 cars per day with out using a drop of mains water.

Other methods that are being employed in the industry to reduce the use of water include filtering waste water for reuse in parts washers and other processes, the use of high pressure, low volume hoses, and the replacement of single flush toilets with dual flush systems. Dry car washing techniques are also becoming more common as the water restrictions alter the way cleaning cars is undertaken. MTA NSW members have adopted these techniques, suppliers suggesting that dry washing a car costs $6 and saves 200L of water.

At present reducing the amount of water wasted is critical. With increasing demands and a greater public awareness it is important that everyone in the automotive industry do their part to reduce the amount of water they are using. Not only can it help the environment it will also reduce your water bill, so get involved look at what your business can do to cut down water use, whether it be some of the methods described here or through simple things such as turning off or fixing dripping taps.

The MTA-SA is aware that there are many businesses who have undertaken water saving initiatives and any information you can provide us on these initiatives is welcome, particularly for small businesses. Please contact Carly Roworth on 8291 2000 or email at: CRoworth@mta-sa-asn.au
